A strong barrier trial win has much-travelled stakes performer Alpha Beat primed to claim victory in his fourth state at his first start in Queensland.
Formerly trained by Anthony Cummings, Alpha Beat has not raced since finishing ninth in the Group Two Ajax Stakes at Rosehill on March 12.
Now with David Vandyke on the Sunshine Coast, Alpha Beat will tackle Saturday's Open Handicap (1350m) at Doomben.
Alpha Beat, the winner of the 2014 Listed Adelaide Guineas, has wins at Caulfield in Melbourne and Randwick in Sydney on his record.
He also finished third in Group Two company in the 2014 Two Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield won by Vilanova.
Vandyke's racing manager Alan Thomas said Alpha Beat had settled in well in Queensland and pleased connections with his barrier trial win on the inside track at the Sunshine Coast earlier this month.
"Alpha Beat didn't beat much in the trial but he hit the line very well and his final sectional was good for the day on a soft track," Thomas said.
"I would expect him to settle off the pace on Saturday and be running home. He has won first-up and he can handle all types of conditions which is a plus."
Vandyke had considered taking Alpha Beat to Townsville for the Cleveland Bay Handicap but decided to remain in Brisbane.
Top Toowoomba jockey Ron Goltz will make a rare visit to a Brisbane Saturday meeting to Alpha Beat and stablemate Emerald City in the Benchmark 85 (1615m).
"Ron is vastly experienced and can ride light while still being very strong," Thomas said.
Vandyke is gradually increasing his number of runners since moving from Sydney in April and won a maiden at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday with ex-Godolphin filly Pursuits, a dual stakes placegetter.
"Pursuits won a trial the same day as Alpha Beat so hopefully it is an omen," Thomas said.
