Apprentice Ben Thompson has exceeded his expectations in his first season riding in the city arena and will be out to continue his strong winter form at Caulfield.
Thompson has been riding in races for just over two years but only made his metropolitan debut in December.
Since riding his first winner in Melbourne in January, Thompson has added another 20 heading into the final meeting of the season at Caulfield on Saturday where he is booked for six rides.
The 19-year-old has been a regular in the winner's stall in recent weeks with 14 city winners since the start of June, highlighted by five doubles.
"I've had a lot of great support and I think that's really been key to the success I've recently had," Thompson said.
"Things have happened a lot quicker than I predicted and I've got down to my two kilogram claim a lot sooner than I expected.
"I really can't complain with how things are going and more than anything I'm just thankful for the rides I'm getting."
Apprentices have their city claim reduced from 3kg to 2kg after riding 20 metropolitan winners.
"I was hoping to outride my three kilo claim within 12 months of riding in town," Thompson said.
"I've had a great winter thus far and hopefully it can continue."
Thompson said an 11-meeting careless riding suspension early this month had been the only real disappointment of the winter.
The apprentice is looking forward to his six rides on Saturday and the season ahead.
"I've set a couple of little goals for myself, and hopefully I can work away at my city claim and more opportunities arise," he said.
