Ulmann completes Weir treble at Flemington

Saturday 6 August 2016, 3:16pm

There is no stopping Darren Weir.

After notching a Commonwealth training record of 348 winners last season of which 106 came in Melbourne, Weir saddled a treble in consecutive races when Ulmann took out the VRC Member Daniel Mahar Handicap at Flemington on Saturday.

Ulmann's win followed victories from Killarney Kid's and Royal Rapture.

Ridden by apprentice Ben Allen and sent out the $3.20 favourite, Ulmann scored a three-quarter length win from Pilote D'Essai ($4.20) with She's Clean ($18) 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Ulmann is part-owned by former trainer Peter Moody who sent the five-year-old to Weir when he closed his operation in March.

"I've got to thank Pete for picking me to train him," said Moody.

"He's good to train for. He's good to talk to, good to bounce a few things off and a good owner to have."

Ulmann has had three starts for Weir, winning at Caulfield last month before his Flemington success.

Weir said he would look at raising the bar and suggested there might be a suitable richer contest during the spring.

"He's got a bit of upside to him," Weir said.

"I think he'll get a bit further so I'll have to sit down and have a think about where to go now."

Weir suggested Ulmann could be a contender in Group One handicaps like the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and Toorak Handicap if he continues on an upward spiral.

The Weir-trained Trust In A Gust won both races in 2014 while Stratum Star won the Sir Rupert Clarke for Weir last year.
