Sharpe Hussler to boost prize money

Monday 8 August 2016, 12:16pm

Trainer Brad Smith will send Sharpe Hussler to a midweek meeting hoping he can pick up enough prize money to ensure he gains starts in Saturday grade races.

Sharpe Hussler would have been one of the favourites for a no metropolitan win race at Eagle Farm on Saturday but failed to get a run as third emergency.

"It is getting harder and harder to get into those races on a Saturday. Sharpe Hussler will run at Doomben on Wednesday and hopefully he can win," Smith said.

"Then we can start planning around getting starts in these Saturday races."

The gelding will add some on-track interest to the Doomben meeting on Wednesday which has been dubbed Mekka Day, a meeting designed to attract 20,000 young, but over 18, racegoers and coinciding with people's day at the annual Ekka show in Brisbane.

Smith is one of Brisbane's up and coming trainers and has developed a more than handy team in recent years.

Sharpe Hussler will have 10 rivals and jump from barrier one in Wednesday's Class Five Handicap (1200m) with Robbie Fradd to ride.

Saturday was far from a write-off for Smith with the promising San Telmo winning a 1600m-Benchmark 75.

"We got him at a tried horse sale from Anthony Cummings in February," Smith said.

"He came to us in good condition and we have taken our time with him.

"His best form in Sydney was over a middle distance and we will step him up to 2000 metres soon. He has a nice turn of foot and should win in better company."
