Suavito chases another 1400m Caulfield win

Wednesday 10 August 2016, 1:48pm

Suavito kicks off her spring campaign looking to add another stakes race over the 1400 metres at Caulfield to her first-up record.

The Nigel Blackiston-trained mare runs in the Group Two P B Lawrence Stakes on Saturday over her favourite course and distance.

Suavito has started over the Caulfield 1400m seven times, registering four wins and three minor placings.

She has begun her past three campaigns at the track over her pet distance, notching victories on each occasion, including two at Group One level in the Futurity Stakes in 2015 and the Orr Stakes in February.

"Her record at the 1400 (metres) is impeccable," Blackiston said.

"And so too is her record at Caulfield."

Suavito hasn't raced since being thwarted by a wet-track when 11th behind Azkadellia in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Randwick in April.

That followed her unplaced effort in the Australian Cup (2000m) in March after stepping up from a 1400m third placing behind Turn Me Loose in the Futurity Stakes.

Blackiston explained Suavito had also been inoculated for a possible trip to Hong Kong which he said may have had an effect on the latter stages of her preparation.

"I think she might have lost a bit of interest after having a long break," he said.

Since returning to Blackiston's stable Suavito has undergone a faultless campaign.

"She's been in work nearly three months now," Blackiston said.

"She came back in good order and has had a couple of jump-outs.

"The first one was really good. The second one was just fair but that's her.

"She never trials well in the second trial. She just goes through the motions.

Damien Oliver rode Suavito in both Flemington jump-outs but has switched to the Danny O'Brien-trained Miss Rose De Lago in the Lawrence.

Michael Walker has picked up the Suavito ride.

"I've had a great rapport with Michael over many years," Blackiston said.

"We seem to click really well together and he suits my horses.

"I'm pleased that he's on board."
