Grahame Begg admits he has been on a learning curve since setting up his new stable in Victoria.

The former Randwick trainer is now domiciled at Pinecliff, a private training establishment on the Mornington Peninsula.

After 25 years training at Randwick, Begg closed his stables in December 2014.

He renewed his licence June and had his first runners from his Pinecliff base in July.

Last week he had his first metropolitan runner with Mossin' Around finishing an unlucky sixth in the MRC Foundation Handicap at Caulfield before Emoji opened Begg's winning account with victory at Pakenham on Tuesday.

Begg says training at Pinecliff is vastly different from the hustle and bustle of Randwick.

He currently has six in work with a further eight to 10 being broken in.

"It's a huge difference from training at Randwick trying to assess a horse's fitness," Begg said.

"Working out what they need and what they don't need because of the uphill gallops.

"People who have been training here for some time suggest you don't want to be doing too much too close to a race because they might leave it on the track."

Begg also has day paddocks and the beach at his disposal, but is waiting until the weather warms up to take advantage of the salt water.

But he says it's also important to slip away from Pinecliff to give the horses a day away.

In recent weeks he's been to trials at Pakenham and Cranbourne and in the coming months there will be jump-outs at Balnarring and Mornington where he can also take horses grass gallops.

"The horses need to get away from the farm because it's so quiet and the same environment everyday," Begg said.

"We haven't used the beach quite yet so when the weather picks up we'll have that advantage as well as paddocks in the day."
