Group 1 Golden Rose looms large for Leotie

Saturday 27 August 2016, 1:27pm

Leotie has booked a trip to Sydney for the Golden Rose following a soft win at Caulfield.

However a start in the Group One race at Rosehill on September 10 will depend on the condition of the track.

An easing $2.30 favourite for the Wedrive.com.au Plate, Leotie, ridden by Chris Parnham, scored by 1-1/4 lengths from Sebrikka ($3.40) with Perfectly Safe ($4.40) a short-head away third.

Trainer Henry Dwyer would rather head to Rosehill and contest the $1 million Golden Rose than take on the males at Flemington over the same trip for considerably less money on the same day.

"If she ran second or third in the Golden Rose it would be worth more to her than the Flemington race as it's a Group One race," Dwyer said.

"But I wouldn't want to travel her and run on a bog track and flatten her for her main targets.

"If it's a suitable race and a suitable track, we'll probably go."

Dwyer described Leotie as a better filly when chasing other horses.

He noted Leotie raced keenly when the pace slackened in the middle stages of the race but was impressed with her turn of foot.

Dwyer said if Leotie missed the Golden Rose he would contemplate the Exford Plate (1400m) on September 10.

Although he wouldn't be fazed if Leotie went straight to the Thousand Guineas Prelude at Caulfield on September 24.

Dwyer also has later spring targets including the Thousand Guineas on October 8 and the VRC Oaks at Flemington in November for Leotie.
