Wild Rain right to run at Moonee Valley

Friday 2 September 2016, 12:42pm

Wild Rain has recovered from a virus and is ready to take her place in a stakes race at Moonee Valley.

The winner of the Sir John Monash Stakes on July 16, Wild Rain missed the Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley on August 20.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh said the mare's blood picture was spot-on again ahead of Saturday's Group Two McEwen Stakes (1000m).

"She had a slight virus and her blood wasn't quite right so that's why we missed that race the other day," Kavanagh said.

"Her blood's all fine now."

Wild Rain has been consistent since May last year, failing to fill a place only twice from 11 starts.

In that period she has won five races including three at black-type level.

While she won over 1100m last start, Kavanagh believes the mare is better placed over Saturday's shorter course.

"I was pretty happy to see her finish off the way she did over 1100 (metres), but certainly the 1000 is her go," Kavanagh said.

"She likes to be fresh. She likes Moonee Valley and she likes 1000 metres.

"Where she goes after Saturday, we'll wait and see.

"She'll fiddle around at the 1000, maybe in 1100 metre races but we'll be poking along with her."

Kavanagh has ruled out next month's Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley with her ultimate goal the Magic Millions Sprint at the Gold Coast in January.

She finished second to Husson Eagle in that race this year.
