Hayes team to train Caviar's first foal

Thursday 22 September 2016, 6:59pm

Black Caviar's first foal will join the Lindsay Park team headed by Hall of Fame trainer David Hayes.

The two-year-old filly named Oscietra, a type of caviar, will join the training partnership of Hayes, his son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig which has a base at Euroa in country Victoria.

The owners of Black Caviar, who gave birth to her third foal on Sunday, also announced in a statement distributed by Racing Victoria, that the champion mare's second foal would join the Hawkes Racing team's Flemington stable when he was ready for training.

"As the majority of Black Caviar's owners are based in Victoria, all owners agreed that Nelly's progeny will be trained in Victoria," the statement said.

"The owners are pleased to tonight announce that the training partnership of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig will train Black Caviar's first foal, the two-year-old filly Oscietra, who is also affectionately known as Gertie.

"The Hayes/Dabernig team have a world class training facility in Euroa. David Hayes, a Hall of Fame trainer, has had great success with fillies and we believe training in a country atmosphere is a major positive. Oscietra was broken-in during February and has since been well educated. She will go to her new environment next week."

The ownership group also thanked Black Caviar's trainer, the now-retired Peter Moody and said they had indicated to both the new stables they would like, where possible, to continue their relationship with the great mare's jockey Luke Nolen.
