Part-time trainer takes Rosehill Highway

Saturday 24 September 2016, 3:42pm

Part-time Mudgee trainer David Smith might be reassessing his other work commitments after Distinctive Look took out the Highway Handicap, winning $34,500 prize money.

Smith, who combines training with his job at Gooree Stud, watched on as his four-year-old gelding streaked home to win the 1500m Highway Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday.

The trainer owns a stake in the horse along with his partner Natasha Binns and has been training a small team for about three years.

The Rosehill win is his biggest success.

"I mean these Highway races, it's a great turn for us to get down here and a have a go in the big smoke," he said.

After four years working under John O'Shea it was an unbelievable feeling to stand as a victorious trainer in the same mounting yard where he was once a handler, he said.

"David's doing a great job. He said to me before he kept a bit of freshness in him and it was probably the key," Distinctive Look's jockey Koby Jennings said.

Smith said he was looking forward to coming back to Sydney in a fortnight for another Highway Handicap, races restricted to country-trained horses.
