Khan follows Capitalist lead in 2YO Plate

Saturday 1 October 2016, 2:04pm

For the second year in a row, trainers Peter and Paul Snowden have saddled the winner of the Breeders' Plate with Khan emulating stablemate Capitalist in the first two-year-old race in Sydney this season.

Whether he can keep the similarities going in the Magic Millions and Golden Slipper remains to be seen but he will be given his chance.

"We'll need to talk to the team tomorrow and just see what their thoughts are but more than likely it will be the same sort of plan this year," Peter Snowden said.

"He's got a pedigree that would suggest he is going to get a lot further, he probably showed that today. The further the race went the better he got.

"He's a very exciting colt and he's got the ability to match those looks."

Condor Heroes was an easing $2.80 favourite in Saturday's 1000m race at Randwick on the back of his stunning 9-1/4 length win in a barrier trial.

He led for much of the race but could not find an answer to the finishing burst from Khan ($5.50) who put 1-1/4 lengths on him.

The two had the measure of the rest of the field with third-placed Bowerman ($17) 2-1/4 lengths behind Condor Heroes.

Condor Heroes' jockey Tim Clark said the colt was at a disadvantage leading the field to the home turn with the wind in his face.

"I thought he went really well," Clark said.

"He had to carve into that headwind down the side which wasn't ideal but I thought he dug along really bravely."

Raced by a syndicate headed by bloodstock agent James Harron, Khan was a $260,000 Magic Millions yearling.

The colt is by Exceed And Excel who also sired Jorda, the winner of the Saturday's Gimcrack Stakes for fillies.
