French Emotion sails home at Flemington

Sunday 2 October 2016, 5:42pm

Being forced to go back in the field from a wide draw has helped French Emotion finish strongly for a stakes win at Flemington.

The mare's win in Sunday's Group Two Blazer Stakes brought up a winning double for premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller after Wine Bush's win in the UCI Stakes.

Ridden by Ben Melham, French Emotion drifted from $4.80 to $7 before scoring a long neck victory over Pure Pride ($21) with Vibrant Rouge ($19) a length away third.

Johanne Taylor, who heads Waller's Melbourne base, said riding the mare back in blustery conditions looking for cover was a decisive move.

"The last time we were in this type of company we raced on the speed and she was found wanting over the final couple of hundred metres," Taylor said.

"So we thought going back and getting some cover and putting our sails up and running home would work well.

"She's a lovely versatile filly and if we can continue to get good tracks there's no reason why she shouldn't be able to take the next step."

Melham said recent barrier draws had dictated the way the mare had been ridden in her previous three runs this campaign.

French Emotion struck a purple patch of form during the autumn winning four races on end and Melham said she was capable of performing well in the Group One Myer Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup meeting.

"Today was a good opportunity to ride her quietly and she let go with a good turn of foot," Melham said.

"I think she deserves a crack at running in the Myer. Ridden that way I'd imagine she'd run a mile no worries."
