Seaburge is not certain to back up in a Group Two race seven days after his Caulfield Guineas second with trainer David Hayes considering waiting another week.

The talented colt headlines a field of 14 for Saturday's $500,000 Caulfield Classic (2000m) for three-year-olds after his narrow defeat by Divine Prophet in last Saturday's Group One Guineas (1600m).

"He's in good shape. We're just going to make a decision in the next 24 hours about whether we run or whether we wait for The Vase," Hayes said on Wednesday.

"I just want to have a look at the race and the pattern."

The Group Two Vase (2040m) is at Moonee Valley on Saturday week.

Hayes says Seaburge is a horse who likes a bit of racing room and the colt has barrier one in Saturday's Caulfield Classic.

"The inside barrier is not ideal," he said.

Kerrin McEvoy is booked to ride Seaburge in the Caulfield Classic.

Seaburge has been installed equal favourite at $3.50 for the Caulfield Classic along with the James Cummings-trained Good Standing who is also coming through the Caulfield Guineas.

Good Standing, to be ridden by Blake Shinn, finished 2-1/4 lengths from the winner when seventh in the Guineas and has barrier four for his first attempt at 2000m.
