Oliver appeals reckless riding suspension

Thursday 13 October 2016, 6:49am

Champion jockey Damien Oliver will fight a reckless riding ban which rules him out of three key spring carnival meetings.

Oliver's appeal against the 20-meeting suspension will be heard on Friday morning.

Stewards said Oliver's actions were reckless at the 700m mark of Wednesday's Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield on eventual winner Flying Artie when he angled out from behind the leader and made heavy contact with the horse to his outside.

As things stand, Oliver will miss the ride on French horse Vadamos in Saturday week's $3 million Cox Plate as well as English in the Group One Manikato Stakes the night before.

His ban also rules him out of the Victoria Derby meeting on October 29.
