Sharpe Hussler to tackle open company

Thursday 27 October 2016, 11:06am

Trainer Brad Smith does not usually run his horses out of their grades but has made an exception with Sharpe Hussler at Eagle Farm.

Smith had entered Sharpe Hussler for a restricted class race over 1200 metres on Saturday as well as the Padua College Open (1400m) and has opted for the latter.

"I decided to give him his chance in open company mainly so we can see him out to 1400 metres," Smith said.

"He is going for a break after this race and we will bring him back for some better class races next year."

"I don't like throwing horses into the ocean unless necessary. But he showed what he can do with his win at 1300 metres at Eagle Farm at his last start.

"If there is a strong pace he can get home very strongly. It is a good strong open handicap so we will get a good idea of where he is at."

Smith said Sharpe Hussler was standing up well to his longest preparation.

"This is the first time we have been able to get out past four runs in a campaign," he said.

Smith's biggest concern is that Sharpe Hussler may be too close to some experienced horses at the weights.

"Some of the top weights are stakes winners and have claimed so we are a bit close in the weights," he said.

"I did consider also claiming but Jim (Orman) handled him very well last start.

"It can be a bit hard to time Sharpe Hussler's run so we will stick with Jim.

"You have horses like Saluter and Jopa who have been in open company for a long time so I am really looking forward to seeing how we go."
