Criterion's half-brother wins Carbine Club

Saturday 29 October 2016, 12:47pm

Chris Waller has used the Carbine Club Stakes as a stepping stone to Group One success with Kermadec and is hoping history repeats with Criterion's half-brother Comin' Through.

Comin' Through was aimed at Saturday's Group Three race at Flemington and showed he is a colt on the rise with a narrow win over Godolphin pair Morton's Fork and Bezel.

Comin' Through is a Fastnet Rock half-brother to now-retired $7 million earner Criterion and Waller is hopeful the patient approach pays off in the autumn and beyond.

Waller won the Carbine Club with Kermadec two years ago and he went on to be a luckless Australian Guineas runner last year abefore winning the $3 million Doncaster Mile among his two Group One wins.

"He just took a while to furnish but he's furnished in a big way now," Waller said.

"He's followed exactly the same path at this stage as Kermadec and they've got to just keep improving to get to that Group One level."

Waller believes Comin' Through can be a Guineas contender.

"He's got a great pedigree so that gives you confidence," he said.

Criterion won four Group One races including last year's $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Jockey Michael Walker had an association with Criterion and rates Comin' Through a serious horse.

"He could've gone around again and had lengths up his sleeve. He got to the front and pulled up," Walker said.
