While his more favoured stablemate Azazel disappointed, the Tony McEvoy-trained Aspect powered home at his racetrack debut in Saturday's $150,000 Group III Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) to credit his sire Pluck (USA) with his first stakes winner.

Given time to find his feet by Kerrin McEvoy the striking chestnut colt quickened impressively to defeat by Cao Cao (Fastnet Rock) by a length and a quarter with Wait For No One (Lonhro) three-quarters of a length back in third. 

"He performed well in a jumpout down the straight," Kerrin McEvoy said.

"He gave me a nice feel but he gave me a much better feel today under race conditions.

He's not just a speed horse so he might get over a bit further, he's got a lovely way about him. He carries himself well, there's more to come from him."  

Tony McEvoy said the Snitzel colt Azazel ($4.20 fav) in the race, but the Snitzel colt didn't handle straight racing as well as his stablemate, finishing in a dead-heat for fourth.

"Azazel from the outset was wanting to go left," McEvoy said.

"Unfortunately, I didn't have an opportunity to give him a look at the straight whereas I did with Aspect and it really showed the benefit, he raced like a professional horse today and when he got to the front went straight as a gun barrel."

He's a very good quality colt and he really impressed me. The length of his stride at the finish was fantastic.

"We'll put him aside now, the big dance is in the autumn for two-year-olds so we'll set them for the Slipper or the Diamond, we'll make up our mind as we go along."

A homebred for the Robinson and Stott families, Aspect is the second foal and second winner out of Lonhro's 5-time winning daughter Innishbeg who is a half-sister to Listed winner Tina Melina.

Her first foal Brown Ben (Big Brown) won at Morphettville last week.

Innishbeg has a yearling colt by Testa Rossa and was covered again by Pluck (USA) last year but missed.

Winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf for Team Valour, Pluck (USA) (photo Mark Smith) is almost a clone of his sire More Than Ready (USA).

He is standing his fifth season at Vinery Stud this spring at a fee of $9,900.
