One-time Melbourne Cup favourite Order Of St George has been named Europe's champion stayer as part of a record five winners for trainer Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore at the Cartier Awards including Horse of the Year Minding.

Part-owned by Lloyd Williams who won the Melbourne Cup with Almandin, Order Of St George won the Ascot Gold Cup and finished third in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe as part of a trifecta for O'Brien.

Minding was a five-time Group One winner during 2016 and was also the champion three-year-old filly.

Her stablemate, Arc winner Found, was named champion older horse over a group which included multiple Group One winner HIghland Reel, third in the 2015 Cox Plate behind Winx.

O'Brien also trained the champion juvenile colt, Churchill.

The Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit went to O'Brien, who has enjoyed a truly stunning year.

The awards are decided on a combination of points for Group performances and votes from racing media.
