Weir has eyes on Gold Coast with Speedeor

Saturday 19 November 2016, 4:45pm

Darren Weir will chase successive Magic Millions Guineas victories following the the win of Speedeor at Ballarat.

Mahuta gave Weir his first Magic Millions victory in the Guineas on the Gold Coast this year and has Speedeor aimed at the 1400m contest in January.

Sent out the $2.05 favourite for Saturday's 1100m contest, Speedeor won by 1-1/2 lengths ahead of Dam Ready ($10), with Golden Spin ($5.50) three-quarters of a length away in third.

The win provided Luke Nolen with a Magic Millions double after scoring on Despatch in the Clockwise Classic.

Weir said Speedeor's racing style would be suited to the 1400m journey at the Gold Coast.

He said a program for the son of Northern Meteor before the race was yet to be worked out.

"I don't know what we'll do with him between now and then but it's a good problem to have," Weir said.

"He won't need a lot of racing as he's a very fit horse and he's got a great racing style for up there."

Weir was a little concerned watching Speedeor become hot behind the barriers, which might have resulted in him missing the start slightly.

"I thought he paraded very well but watching him on television behind the barriers, I thought he got hot," Weir said.

"It's a warm day but doing that is a little concerning, but I do think he'll come on quite a bit from that."

Weir said it was satisfying to win a race at his home track Cup meeting after setting 16 horses for the 10-race card.
