2YO Jessamin bolts away on debut at W Farm

Wednesday 23 November 2016, 4:10pm

Wearing the same colours as in his 2013 Golden Slipper triumph on Overreach, Tommy Berry has ridden Jessamin to an impressive debut win at Warwick Farm.

The filly powered home to win Wednesday's two-year-old maiden for fillies over 1000m.

When Jessamin was passed in at $140,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, breeder George Altomonte decided to race her with trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Altomonte partnered with Berry and Waterhouse for Overreach's Slipper win and the combination may have another rich race in sight in next year's Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Bott, who has been promoted to co-trainer since Overreach's victory, admitted the win was not in line with the stable's style.

Berry settled in the second half of the field before taking control at the 200m mark.

"Things didn't seem to pan out as we originally planned," Bott said.

"He just rode it quietly and patiently and she's a very professional filly."

Bott said an eight-day back-up after a trial was also unusual for the stable, giving the win more merit.

"You'd like to think being Magic Millions eligible we'd progress up that path," he said.

"She was really impressive today."

Jessamin defied her $7 quote, letting down strongly to beat the Anthony Cummings-trained Memento by three-quarters of a length.

Heavily-backed $1.80 favourite Goldfinch pulled up lame after finishing third and racing greenly.
