An inch is as good as a proverbial mile when it comes to determining the winner of any race. The result is the same. To the winner goes the spoils – to those who finished behind the winner – they didn’t win !
It was an inch that was the difference in favour of Dynamic runner ARBEITSAM on his resumption from a spell at Wyong on Thursday.
The Gai Waterhouse / Adrian Bott trained AREBEITSAM was expertly turned out for his first up assignment. The result was a courageous, fighting and determined win, having done all the “hard work” and being left as a sitting duck, ARBEITSAM “worked hard” to fight off score.
AREBEITSAM (pronounced AR – BEAT – SUM) is a German word meaning “to work hard.”
He was very cleverly named.
Part 1 being that he is by SNITZEL – the name of a dish that has its origins in Austria and in that country, their language is German.
Part 2 being that the name of our colt’s Dam is WORKHARD.
So the name is cleverly conceived.
ARBEITSAM had to live right up to his name and “work hard” to fend off the challenge of the second favourite Good Time Charlie to claim victory in Race 1 on the programme, the WRC Mid Year Membership Join Now 3yo Maiden Plate over 1200m under the Set Weights Conditions.
After scratchings the field was reduced to a competitive 6 runners. AREBEITSAM had drawn barrier 6 of 6 and was slightly fractious in the stalls. As they jumped, he was on the back foot and a touch tardy to jump.
Expecting to lead clearly on the speed map, the race didn’t pan out that way, with 4 horses pushing forward into the teeth of a strong wind.
Surprisingly to most, the Jason Coyle trained Memes pushed up the hardest to take the lead on the fence with Tim Clark piloting ARBEITSAM across to sit at the girth of the leader. This gave the second favourite Good Time Charlie the chance to take the sit in the one-one out of the breeze and stalking us.
The race field stayed in this position until the point of the home turn where ARBEITSAM was encouraged by Tim to hit the go button.
He quickly dropped off the leader Memes and got a length in front with Good Time Charlie popped out to give chase after having the easy run in transit.
AREBEITSAM was being pushed to the line as the other runner-up began to close and then drawing level, a lesser horse would have thrown in the towel, but the Gai Waterhouse bone and muscle prevailed and ARBEITSAM dug deep to fight back and draw to the lead in the shadows of the post.
A win is a win and they pay on that.
ARBEITSAM banked $16,800 first prize and picked up a $5,000 BOBS Bonus as well.
The time was good for 1200m considering they ran into the teeth of such a strong wind down the length of the back straight because they stopped the clock at 1:10.29 coming home in 34.97 secs which was the same time recorded for the Class 1 event on the programme.
Tim Clark reported that ARBEITSAM was still a bit green and was comfortable to chase the leader but with blinkers on, when he took him to the front, the horse began to star gaze as if he had done his job and couldn’t see other the runner closing. Tim said it was only when he saw the head of the challenger did the horse realise the race was still on and he picked up the bit and attacked the line.
Tim was also of the belief that he has several lengths of improvement in him and that with experience and fitness, 1400m would be ideal.
