Darren Weir takes winning ways west

Saturday 3 December 2016, 9:04pm

Premier Melbourne trainer Darren Weir has won his first Group One race in Perth with Damian Lane getting the most out of Stratum Star to score in a controversial finish over Scales Of Justice in the Kingston Town Classic,

Stewards opened an inquiry after the race into Douglas Whyte's ride on Scales Of Justice who was beaten a nose when the multiple Hong Kong champion appeared to misjudge the finish and not ride his mount out.

Lane had no such problems, and urged Stratum Star to the line to claim his first Group One win in his home state.

The young jockey, who originally comes from Bunbury, has established himself in Melbourne and also created an impression Hong Kong where he rides on Sunday.

"It is very satisfying," Lane said.

"It gives you confidence when a trainer like Darren Weir puts you on.

"It's a long way from where I started from."

Stratum Star was a $10 chance with Scales Of Justice at $5 with the pair 3-1/4 lengths in front of the $4.60 favourite, third placed Perfect Reflection.

Stratum Star hadn't run since November 12 but Weir had given him two barrier trials before the Kingston Town (1800m).

Weir said he had been made welcome in Perth, particularly by Lindsey Smith, the trainer of the runner-up.

"Lindsey was good enough to let us use his track," Weir said.

"You can't make it happen without people letting you stay at their place.

"Everyone has made us welcome."

Weir felt so welcome he reportedly put $5000 on the bar to say thank you to the people of Perth.
