Douglas Whyte pleads not guilty to charge

Sunday 4 December 2016, 2:36pm

Douglas Whyte has pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to ride his mount out to the line on runner-up Scales Of Justice in the Group One Kingston Town Classic at Ascot.

Scales Of Justice was beaten a nose by the Darren Weir-trained Stratum Star ridden by Damian Lane.

Hong Kong's multiple champion jockey, Whyte returned to Perth on Saturday to ride Scales Of Justice after winning the Group One Railway Stakes on him two weeks earlier.

Stewards questioned Whyte at a raceday inquiry before charging him.

They then adjourned the hearing so trainer Lindsey Smith and owner Chris Wells could view the stewards' footage and attend an inquiry at a future date.

The Kingston Town (1800m) was premier Melbourne trainer Weir's first Group One win in Western Australia and also for Lane, originally from WA but now established in Melbourne.

Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller had no luck with Railway Stakes runner-up Good Project scratched on race morning and Mackintosh lame after the race.

Waller's other runner Vanbrugh finished ninth, almost eight lengths from the winner.
