Tasmanian star Geegees Blackflash retired

Tuesday 3 January 2017, 4:15pm

Veteran Tasmanian star Geegees Blackflash has been officially retired by his owner Paul Geard.

A multiple Group Three winner, Geegees Blackflash earned almost $1.2 million without leaving Tasmania, a state record.

The 10-year-old bows out after 69 starts which reaped 22 wins and 27 minor placings in a career stalled more than once, firstly by a bleeding attack in 2010 and a life-threatening bowel condition in 2015.

The gelding's last win was in the 2015 Hobart Cup and he ran his final race on December 21 when he finished last in the Listed Tasmanian Stakes won by his heir apparent in the popularity stakes, Admiral.

Geard told TasRacing the gelding would spend most of his time in a paddock on his farm.

"He's been so good to us," Geard said.

"We're so pleased we can retire him fit and healthy.

"He will enjoy life in a paddock on the farm and from time to time he'll go back to the stable for a couple of weeks.

"He loves stable life and being a part of it."
