Good Luck Malela on Derby trail

Friday 6 January 2017, 3:03pm

Bryan Guy rarely has pre-race nerves but he is edgy about the performance of promising three-year-old Good Luck Malela at the Gold Coast.

Good Luck Malela will probably be having his last run for this campaign in Saturday's QTIS Three Year Old (1800m).

If Good Luck Malela races well he could take a proven path to the Group One Queensland Derby in the winter.

Guy and his training partner, son Daniel, never get too far ahead with their horses but they do hold hopes Good Luck Malela can develop into a handy stayer.

"He races like a stayer and I liked the way he worked home when fourth last start at Doomben," Bryan Guy said.

"He had to come very wide in the straight while the winner got a cart straight through the middle of the field.

"I am not saying he would have beaten the winner (Volpino) but I think he should have run second."

Guy won last year's Queensland Derby with Eagle Way who he took from a maiden to a Group One winner in the space of six months.

"We are keen to give him a try in handy company at 1800 metres and hopefully get his prize money and rating up," he said.

"If he runs well on Saturday we will ask the owners to spell him and bring him back for a similar campaign to Eagle Way.

"We are not getting ahead of ourselves but it is a plan in pencil at the moment."
