Apprentice to ride Heartbreak City

Thursday 19 January 2017, 8:00am

Claiming apprentice Donagh Meyler has been given the opportunity aboard Melbourne Cup runner-up Heartbreak City for his return over hurdles at Leopardstown.

Heartbreak City will make his first appearance since his narrow defeat in Melbourne when he runs as favourite in the Coral.ie Hurdle on Sunday.

"Donagh is as good a young lad as we've seen in the last five years," trainer Tony Martin said.

"I've been fortunate enough to have two of what I think are the best three young riders in the last five years in Donagh and Shane Shortall, along with Jack Kennedy.

"Donagh generally rides most of my horses. The owners don't have a problem with him,. He's a hard-working fellow and would always be my number one choice.

"He has been with me for the past two or three years since Shane Shortall moved on."

Heartbreak City won a hurdle at Galway before earning a trip to Australia with victory in the prestigious Ebor Handicap.
