Fitting First Australian Winner for Squamosa

Thursday 19 January 2017, 10:41am

It only seems fitting that the first Australian winner for Sun Stud's Squamosa should carry the purple and white Star Thoroughbreds colours that were carried with much success by her sire.

Prepared by Barry Campbell, two year-old filly Derasa improved on her debut third at Launceston back in November, turning the tables on Needs Further filly Il Regalo who was the winner on that occasion.

Lining up in the $30,000 Ensign Lodge Alfa Bowl Stakes at Launceston on Wednesday evening, Derasa settled midfield and powered to the line to win the 1100 metre dash by three quarters of a length over Il Regalo and another Needs Further filly in Pateena Arena to give first season sires the trifecta.

Derasa was a $39,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase for Star Thoroughbreds / Paul Willetts from the Fairways Bloodstock draft and is the first winner for Jesting, a Commands mare from the family of champion racehorse Fantastic Light and Australian Group I winner Your Song.

Fairways Bloodstock will offer the current yearling from Jesting, a colt by Fighting Sun at the 2017 Adeladie Magic Millions as Lot 121.

Derasa is the first Australian winner for Not a Single Doubt's brilliant Group III winning son Squamosa, who is also the sire of stakes-placed winner Kiwi Ida in New Zealand.

Squamosa stands at Sun Stud in Victoria at a fee of $6,600 and covered 121 mares last year, by far his biggest book of mares to date.
