Shinn hit with another careless riding ban

Saturday 21 January 2017, 7:22pm

Jockey Blake Shinn has been suspended for careless riding for the second time in four days.

Shinn followed up a five-meeting ban incurred at Warwick Farm on Wednesday with a six meeting suspension at Randwick on Saturday for his ride on third placegetter Roaring To Win in the final event.

The latest suspension is due to start on January 30, one day after the Karaka Million at Ellerslie where Shinn is due to ride in the $NZ1 million feature.

He is allowed to return to riding on February 12.

Shinn pleaded not guilty but stewards found he allowed his mount to shift in and cause interference to Matthew Cahill on Got The Goss at about the 700m mark.

Shinn asked chief steward Marc Van Gestel whether he honestly believed Shinn was not making an effort to correct his horse's shift.

"You don't ask the questions, I ask the questions," Van Gestel replied.

While stewards accepted he had made corrective action when Roaring To Win had shifted in, they determined he had not acted quickly enough to prevent the interference.

Shinn has been given a stay of proceedings after appealing the Warwick Farm suspension and a four-meeting ban for the same charge handed to him on January 3 at Kembla Grange.

If his appeals are unsuccessful, the Group One-winning rider is looking down the barrel at 15 metropolitan and provincial meetings on the sidelines.
