Group One placed Teronado has been retired

Group One placed Teronado has been retired with connections deciding it is too risky to continue with him.

Teronado won four races and $278,000 prize money with the latter part of his career dogged by injury.

The gelding ran third to Criterion in the 2014 Group One Rosehill Guineas and was among the early favourites for that year's Caulfield Cup.

But disaster struck at Randwick in the 2014 George Main Stakes when he was galloped on and a tendon was severely damaged.

Only emergency surgery saved him.

Trainer Bruce Hill nursed Teronado back to health and Teronado was able to race on including a close-up sixth to champion Winx in the 2015 Epsom Handicap.

Hill continued to ease Teronado through campaigns but spelled him after he ran unplaced at Doomben in October.

"I went to see him in his spelling paddock and gave him another month. Then I went back and had a good look at him. We decided it was time to retire him," Hill said.

The Gold Coast trainer hopes Man Of His Word can step up to help fill the void as a Group One performer for the stable.

"The Doncaster should be ideal for him but we just have to get him into it. He has a sustained final sprint that few horses can match," Hill said.

Man Of His Word beat Cylinder Beach to win last month's Listed Brisbane Handicap before the positions were reversed in the Bernborough Handicap.
