Trainer Lindsay Gough's secret to success

Sunday 29 January 2017, 12:05pm

Trainer Lindsay Gough has been so successful with the family of broodmare Secret Donna that he has bought her.

Secret Donna is the dam of Secret Mo who made it two wins from two starts at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

The mare was bred by the late Jack O'Hagan, one of the Queensland's best known owner-breeders for more than 60 years until his death in December 2015.

Secret Mo is raced by O'Hagan's children and is trained by Gough.

The family goes back to O'Hagan's mare Belle Salieri who won the 1997 Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Belle Salieri was an outstanding broodmare with seven of her horses winning about 40 races including Belltone, Roman Squire, Belscay, and Lanieri.

They all carried O'Hagan's green, white and black colours.

Another of Belle Salieri's offspring is Secret Donna, a mare by Secret Savings, and although she won only won one race she is also proving a good broodmare.

She is the dam of Oradonna and Stradon who ran third in the 2012 Queensland Guineas.

But Secret Mo looks like being something special and Gough has high hopes for him.

"Jack felt Secret Mo would turn out to be the best horse he bred. Secret Mo is a lovely type of horse and my brother Darren (an ex-jockey) can't fault him," Gough said.

"Anyway I have bought the mare, Secret Donna, so here's hoping."

Gough believes Secret Mo can develop into a carnival horse in the near future.
