Brisbane's racing station turns 25

Monday 30 January 2017, 1:08pm

As Brisbane-based racing radio station RadioTAB celebrates its 25th birthday there are concerns it could be moved to Melbourne's racing broadcaster if the TABCORP merger with UBET goes ahead.

Brisbane Race Club chairman Neville Bell said it would be one of the priorities for his club when it made submissions on the proposed merger to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission.

RadioTAB was the first all racing radio outlet established in Australia when the Queensland TAB took over the licence from former pop music station 4IP.

It originally serviced Queensland and northern NSW but has since expanded to also provide coverage for South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Before 1992 racing in Queensland was broadcast on radio station 4BC but was shared with its general talk back format.

Then TAB boss and racing strongman Ian Brusasco realised for the racing codes to prosper there needed to be an expanded service.

"Many TAB meetings were not even being broadcast and we really needed to get to punters," Brusasco said.

The station broadcasts all Australian TAB covered race meetings and thousands of overseas events each year.

It has a race day at Doomben on Wednesday and several other promotions this week.

RadioTAB general manager David Salmon said the station played a vital role in the racing industry in a major area of Australia.

"To allow quality information access to such a large area of the racing public has always been our aim," he said.
