Pfieffer hunting G1 glory with Denmagic

Monday 30 January 2017, 2:25pm

As trainer David Pfieffer laments the Group One race that got away, the horse which carried him to the big stage is being primed for another tilt at the top level.

Denmagic ran third in the Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on October 29, the high point of a preparation which included four black-type fourth placings.

"Her preparation was pretty good we just didn't get ourselves in the winner's circle which has been a bit painful," Pfieffer said.

"The Myer feels like one of those ones that got away on her."

The four-year-old mare is nominated for the Group Two Breeders Classic (1200m) as well as the benchmark 93 handicap (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

If she races on Saturday it is likely she will progress to the Group Two Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill before tackling the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) at the same track on March 11.

There is also the option of waiting a week for the Group Three Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick which would set her on a path to the Group Two Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) on February 25 en route to the Coolmore.

"She's always one of those ones that has the solid sectionals and she's always there at the end but she's not putting herself in the winner's stall enough," Pfieffer said.

Denmagic ran an eye-catching fifth in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on January 23, closing off well with Group One-placed sprinter Spieth who ran third.

"She travelled nicely in behind them and tracked up good," Pfieffer said.

"Spieth's a good sprinter and I thought they were the two stand-outs in the trial."

While summer has been a quieter period for the Warwick Farm stable, a number of horses have performed well in barrier trials including three-year-old colt I Thought So who holds a nomination for the Australian Guineas.

"We haven't had a lot of runners but the strike rate is very good at the moment," Pfieffer said.

"There's quite a few nice horses ready to pop up and show some of their trial form."
