She Will Reign rules barrier trial

Monday 6 February 2017, 10:36am

Gary Portelli believes She Will Reign is versatile enough to settle behind horses but after her latest barrier trial, the trainer is happy just to let her run.

The equal favourite for the Golden Slipper, She Will Reign won a barrier trial over 808 metres by nine lengths on Monday with Ben Melham sitting quietly and letting her do her thing.

"I'm sure when she gets up in grade she will settle back. She can do that in trackwork but at the moment she is too brilliant," Portelli said.

"She ran time, 45 seconds, going three-quarter pace so if this is her pattern we can't change it until we meet something that can lead her out.

"And so far she has won two races over 1000 metres so we need to see her over 1100 and 1200.

'The next step will be the Silver Slipper.

"We're not getting ahead of ourselves but it's scary stuff."

After the trial, She Will Reign took over $6 outright favouritism for the Golden Slipper on March 18 from Magic Millions winner Houtzen who remained at $8 ahead of Khan and Menari at $11.

Both She Will Reign and Houtzen have earned most of their prize money from sales restricted races and need to win stakes races to ensure they make the Slipper field.

The Toby Edmonds-trained Houtzen may also run in the Silver Slipper Stakes on February 18 or the pair could meet in the Reisling Stakes two weeks later.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Breeders' Plate winner Khan also trialled on Monday with the trainers opting to send him to Gosford where he won his 800m-trial in 49.83s.

Race jockey Blake Shinn was aboard Khan who beat unraced stablemate Coulthard by 2-1/4 lengths.

Group One winners English, Terravista and Astern filled the first three placings in an 811m-trial at Warwick Farm also on Monday.
