Dracarys opens account in Warwick Farm wet

Wednesday 8 February 2017, 5:22pm

Richly bred Dracarys has had to be more tradesman than equine model in making a winning debut at Warwick Farm.

A stand-out individual on looks and easily the most expensive horse to race at the Sydney midweek meeting on Wednesday, Dracarys won the Hyland Race Colours Plate.

The race was run in driving rain and it turned the track into a test of stamina but Dracarys confirmed he is no $1 million show pony, drawing clear for a 1-1/4 length win as the $4 favourite.

"It looked liked he never handled the ground but obviously a little bit of class shone through," co-trainer Paul Snowden said.

"When his wheels (legs) were spinning turning for home I thought 'gee, here we go,' but as I said his class got him through in the end."

Dracarys carries the James Harron Bloodstock colours worn by last year's Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and this season's impressive two-year-olds Pariah and Khan.

Snowden said just because Dracarys carried a $1 million price tag out of the yearling sale ring, it didn't translate to instant racetrack success for the stable's latest two-year-old winner.

"He's always been a work in progress but he's handled himself very well today and he's gained a lot of experience from that," he said.

Dracarys' sire is leading stallion Snitzel and his dam is the Elusive Quality mare Nocturnelle, a six-time winner for Chris Waller.

He was the first leg of a double for Snowden and his father Peter and jockey Corey Brown.

They also combined with So You Think filly The Pinnacle in the #theraces Handicap.
