Katelyn Mallyon has played her part at the launch of Melbourne's Festival of Racing, riding former star sprinter Apache Cat on the sand at St Kilda Beach.

On Saturday the jockey is also hoping to make an impact on the track on the opening day of the carnival when she rides Super Cash in the Group Two Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield.

The Festival of Racing comprises six weeks of feature racing in metropolitan and country Victoria beginning with the first Group One meeting of the year at Caulfield on Saturday highlighted by the C F Orr Stakes (1400m) .

At Thursday's launch at St Kilda, Mallyon sat aboard the popular baldy-faced Apache Cat, an eight-time Group One winner, as the now 14-year-old gelding who resides at Living Legends was led along the beach.

"It's great being a part of the launch and being able to ride Apache Cat up and down St Kilda beach," Mallyon said.

"I actually got to ride him yesterday at Altona Beach so I got the feel of him. He looks fantastic.

"It's a credit to Living Legends how they've got him looking and feeling."

Mallyon is also looking forward to riding the Andrew Noblet-trained Super Cash in Saturday's Rubiton (1100m).

The jockey is no stranger to success in the Rubiton Stakes after guiding the speedy Heatherly to victory a year ago.

"I'm lucky to be aboard Super Cash who I trialled last week and I'm really happy with the way that she's going," Mallyon said.

"She feels enormous and I'm really excited to get out there because I've got to defend my title after winning the race on Heatherly last year."

After her busy morning, Mallyon headed to Kilmore where she rode a double at the country meeting on the Noblet-trained Napolean's War and Robert De Hero, a stablemate of Heatherly trained by Mat Ellerton and Simon Zahra.
