Ruby Red Heart does the job for Zielke

Saturday 11 February 2017, 2:23pm

Trainer John Zielke admits to being more nervous than he had been in years before Ruby Red Heart stamped her ticket for a winter carnival campaign at Doomben.

Ruby Red Heart was heavily backed in the lead-up to Saturday's Two-Year-Old (1200m), firming from $5.50 on Thursday to $2.20 on race day.

She didn't let her backers down, leading all the way to beat Lady Lark ($2.90) by three-quarters of a length.

"I was the most nervous I have been in a long time before this race. I had a bit to say about her before the race but she backed me up," Zielke said.

"Only good two-year-olds can win at 1200 metres at their first race starts on a Saturday. But she had been belting other horses in trackwork running fast time."

"She is my darling. She eats grain and I eat grass."

Zielke said Ruby Red Heart would have one more run over 1350m in a fortnight and then be spelled with the winter carnival in mind.

"She will be aimed at the Sires' Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm which suit perfectly," he said.

The filly was bred by part owner Greg Catton and when she failed to reach her reserve at the Magic Millions sale he decided to race her with a group of friends.

Lady Lark will also back up at Doomben over 1350m in a fortnight before a spell.

"She ran out of metres to catch the winner today but 1350 metres will be ideal," trainer Desleigh Forster said.
