James Doyle escapes serious injury in fall

Monday 13 February 2017, 7:35pm

Godolphin jockey James Doyle has escaped serious injury despite falling heavily from his Triscay Stakes mount.

Doyle was thrown from the John O'Shea-trained Pearls in the middle stages of the Group Three race for mares at Randwick on Monday.

One of Sydney's form riders since replacing banned jockey James McDonald at Godolphin's Australian stable, Doyle regained his feet almost straight after the fall.

He was attended by paramedics and the English rider had suffered a laceration to his left arm while Pearls was taken to the Randwick Equine Centre for assessment.

A stewards' inquiry involving a bandaged Doyle and Tommy Berry found no rider at fault.

"We think it's an accident and we don't think any rider is to blame," chief steward Marc Van Gestal said.

The Triscay was taken out by Zestful, a well-tried $4.20 chance who gave trainer Kris Lees an Apollo Stakes day Group Three treble after wins by Le Romain in the Southern Cross Stakes and Invincible Gem in the Spring Stakes.

Zestful took late runs through the middle of the field for jockey Jason Collett and she arrived in time to beat Nancy ($9) by a long head.

In a three-way finish, the favourite Dixie Blossoms ($4) was a short half-head away third.

Zestful's win presents Lees with a programming challenge.

"I had her down as my horse for the Provincial Championships but I'll have to have a think now," he said.

Horses who are stakes winners are ineligible to contest the rich series for provincial-trained horses.
