Sircconi chases Sires' Produce second-up

Thursday 9 March 2017, 2:28pm

When Sircconi began his autumn two-year-old campaign his trainer had only one race in mind.

But Peter Morgan admits he hasn't been able to give the colt the ideal preparation into Saturday's VRC Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington.

From the time Sircconi came back into work Morgan has been eyeing Saturday's Sires' Produce, but unfortunately he goes into the Group Two race with just one run under his belt.

Backed from $41 to $14, Sircconi finished three-quarters of a length second to the $2.80 Sires' favourite Eshtiraak over 1300m at Sandown on February 22.

Sircconi received 3.5kg from Eshtiraak on that occasion and on Saturday meets him on level weight terms.

"There wasn't a race for him before that," Morgan said.

"They don't seem to put on two-year-old races to go to a 1400-metre race and that was the only one.

"If I had run him earlier in a shorter race and you don't run a place then your rating is down and you might miss out on a run."

Now Morgan is concerned Sircconi could be looking for a little further than Saturday's 1400m.

"He's a little bit dour and even the 1400 metres has me a little bit worried," Morgan said.

"He'll have the pace to be there, but he might not have that little turn of foot."

A trip to Sydney for some of the longer two-year-old races during the carnival depends on how Sircconi performs on Saturday.

"He's still a colt, he's pretty well mannered and has never had a day of soreness so we'll wait until Saturday and see what happens," Morgan said.

Eshtiraak is a pronounced favourite with Sircconi sitting on the fifth line of betting at $9 with only $1.50 separating four horses.
