Easter swan song for race caller Miles

Thursday 9 March 2017, 6:21pm

Greg Miles has decided his race calling career will finish at the track where it all began - Caulfield.

Last November Miles, who has called a record 36 consecutive Melbourne Cups, announced he would retire from calling at the end of his current contract in June but has decided the Easter Saturday meeting on April 15 at Caulfield will be when he hangs up the binoculars.

"There are a couple of reasons why I've decided Easter Saturday will be my last day," Miles said.

"Firstly, it's a significant feature meeting of the Victorian racing season that is on that day and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make that my last.

"Secondly, I called my first ever race at Caulfield.

"That was back on Boxing Day in 1979 when I started out for the ABC. So there is a nice synergy of finishing where I started."

His replacement as Victoria's metropolitan caller is yet to be announced.
