Imported stayer Aloft wins at Flemington

Saturday 11 March 2017, 1:23pm

Imported stayer Aloft has raced to his first Australian victory at Flemington and part-owner Nick Williams believes better things are in store for the lightly raced five-year-old.

A winner of the Listed Queen's Vase (3219m) at Royal Ascot in 2015, Aloft raced twice during the spring carnival in Melbourne last year, finishing third in a Moonee Valley open handicap in September before failing in the Group Three The Bart Cummings (2500m).

The gelding resumed in Saturday's My Kitchen Rules Handicap (1800m) and led under jockey Ben Melham before defeating favourite Hursley by three-quarters of a length with Dodging Bullets another neck away third.

Hursley didn't have the best of luck in the straight in behind the eventual winner.

Williams said the Robert Hickmott-trained Aloft was a genuine stayer and there were options for him both in Melbourne and interstate in the coming weeks.

"He's a beauty this horse," Williams said.

"We didn't have him right in the spring.

"He has shown a bit of his true form today and will only be getting better when he gets out over more ground.

"There's some nice races ahead for him. We'll have to think about whether we take him to Sydney or stay here for the Easter Cup or something.

"There's a range of races he could run in in the next four weeks."
