Trainer Darren Graham has started thinking about late winter carnival feature races after his gelding Morendi made the step up to open company on Saturday.
Morendi ($2.40 favourite) made it three wins from his past five starts when he beat Outraged ($7) by three lengths in the Powering The Happy Handicap (2200m) at Doomben.
The gelding had finished fourth in restricted class at Eagle Farm at his previous start last week but dropped five kilograms for the rise to open company.
"The track at Eagle Farm was shifty last start and that doesn't suit him. He needs a good firm track and that is why we backed him up within a week," Graham said.
"He will either have another start in a fortnight or go for a break. We can start thinking now about some of the winter carnival staying races around Ipswich Cup time. I don't know if he would be up to the southern visitors early in the winter.
"The main thing we would need is a dry winter and good tracks."
Graham was able to pick up Morendi at a Patinack Farms dispersal sale and the gelding has now won six races for him.
Trainer Kelly Schweida said Outraged had done a good job seeing he had been left flatfooted when the field sprinted from the 650m.
