Consommateur lands stakes win in Epona

Saturday 18 March 2017, 6:25pm

Lightly raced mare Consommateur has delivered on a long-range plan in the Group Three Epona Stakes at Rosehill.

Trainer Mick Kent, who is based at Cranbourne in Victoria, pinpointed Saturday's 1900m race for fillies and mares as the target for Consommateur to chase black type and the last-start Sandown midweek winner didn't disappoint.

The four-year-old, having her sixth career start, was sent out an $8.50 chance and surged through the heavy going in the straight under jockey Dwayne Dunn to win by 2-3/4 lengths over Ambience ($17) with Top Of My List ($11) another long neck away third.

Kent won the Epona two years ago with Scratchy Bottom while he also trained Epingle, who finished second and third in the race in consecutive years in 2013 and 2014.

"This whole preparation she has been aimed at this one race," Kent said.

"There's not a lot of black type races over this distance for these mares and we had this race in mind this whole preparation."

Kent said Consommateur also handled rain-affected ground which she got on Saturday with the track rated in the heaviest range.

Consommateur broke her maiden on a heavy track at Yarra Valley at her second start in March last year and Saturday's race was her third start this campaign.

The four-year-old won over 1500m at Sandown at her previous start before stepping to 1900m on Saturday.

Kent is now likely to look to another stakes race for mares over 2000m in Adelaide with Consommateur.
