Great Southern as a yearling ran away from opposition at Pakenham Three year old by Husson – What a sire!!!

Great Southern became our 4th three year old winner for March. He wasn’t given much of a ride at his previous start and was very well handled by Brad Rawiller to score an easy win at Pakenham. This was the horse’s second win with Darren Weir suggesting he may now head to the rich Albury Guineas.

Great Southern has always displayed good promise and is by Husson, a sire that we have supported from his early days in Australia. Husson almost pulled off the unimaginable with Frolic running a gallant 2nd in the Golden Slipper. Frolic is Husson’s only two year old runner this season and she has propelled him into 6th place on the two year old list behind the likes of Snitzel (49 runners), I Am Invincible (33 runners), Fastnet Rock (18 runners) and ahead of Not A Single Doubt (19 runners) and Redoute’s Choice (9 runners).

Husson has only ever served relatively small books of mares with only three of his current crop of two year olds being named. He only has 38 yearlings in his current crop of yearlings which accounts for the small number on offer at the sales.

Prime Thoroughbreds has purchased 11 Husson progeny over the years with two of these being yearlings from the recent sales. Of the nine of racing age eight have raced with six winning. Montana Pines is likely to run on today at Doomben in a maiden and should be hard to beat. Apart from Great Southern which cost $240,000 as a yearling from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, these horses were not expensive with the best being Husson Eagle and Raido. Husson has had another good season with stakes or feature wins by Lucky Hussler, Frolic, Private Secretary and of course Husson Eagle.

For him to occupy 25th position on the National Sire’s List is a remarkable effort given the relatively small numbers representing him. Husson has a very promising young horse in Hong Kong named Nothinglikemore with three wins from as many starts. Check out the two Husson fillies we have on offer, they are stunning types. He really throws good types that improve with age.

HINCHINBROOK

Hinchinbrook was another sire we supported from the first year of his stud career. He has done a remarkable job winning Champion First and Second Season sire but it his overall statistics that are suggesting he could be something special. Only time will tell but he has a stakes winner to winner ratio of 11.5% which is up there with the best. Snitzel comes in at 12.8%, Not A Single Doubt at 8%, Fastnet Rock at 12.2%, Stratum 8%, Redoute’s Choice 15.9%, More Than Ready 12.3%, I Am Invincible 9.6% and Lonhro 9.3%.

It would pay you to look at the colt by Hinchinbrook I am offering. He is a cracker of a horse and the ‘right’ type by this outstanding young sire. Flying Jess the winner of the $2 million Magic Million Guineas is by Hinchinbrook.

ON THE TRACK

We didn’t have much go right on Saturday with the rain affected tracks at Rosehill and the Gold Coast giving us little hope of success. Hopefully we get more favourable conditions over the next few days where we have Montana Pines running at Doomben, Great Southern in the Albury Guineas, Savoureux in the Star Kingdom Stakes, Banachek at Ballarat and Isthmian at Taree. The state of the tracks will determine how many of these horses start. I hope for the ATC that the rain around Sydney starts to ease up before the two weeks of ‘The Championships’. The quality of racing on offer over these two weeks is exceptional.

THIS WEEK’S YEARLINGS

Firstly, I would like to make the point that I am very happy with the way our yearling purchases have been received by the market. I have steadily increased ‘our spend’ at the yearling sales over the past few years but felt I needed to if we were to continue to be competitive and a leader in our industry. At the end of the day I am out there trying to buy not only horses that can win on the track but also to secure horses that can compete with the best on the big days.

It is no fluke that there is rarely a major carnival in Melbourne and Sydney where we are not represented. Our effort in having seven runners at the Magic Millions $10 million Day in January shouldn’t be under estimated. Our trainers and I had targeted the day and to win one of the big races was a dream result, with luck in running we could have won a couple more but there are so many variables in racing.

I have completed my purchases and won’t be attending the Inglis Easter Sale. I could get 100 yearlings vetted and not get a bid in with the average likely to be around $300,000. My plan this year was to purchase 13 yearlings. I have finished up with 14 spread across six states. This week I will highlight the two Husson fillies and the Needs Further filly. These are all good types of fillies from outstanding studs and represent excellent value.

2015 Needs Further / Tycoon Sali filly – Stuart Gandy to train

10% shares $5,500 - 5% shares $2,750

Last year when I attended the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale I was taken with some of the progeny of Armidale Stud’s first season sire Needs Further. They certainly looked like racehorses and this assessment has been backed up with them coming out running with one of his daughters being the first stakes winner of the first season sires in Australia. The four I liked and had vetted by Needs Further were well received by the market selling for up to $60,000 although this filly was the one I wanted.

She is very athletic and has nice length to her. Having written that she also quite strong and possesses a wonderful hindquarter. She has an attractive head. Last Tycoon as a sire put a lot of quality into his progeny. This is the case with this filly. She is a terrific chance of doing the job for us and is the first yearling I have purchased for Stuart Gandy.

I am paying her up for both the Tasmanian and Adelaide Magic Millions. Hopefully she can join Flying Jess, Husson Eagle, Hidden Wonder, Rose Of Scotland, Atalanta Miss and Rumeron as a winner of a Magic Millions feature race.

Update: Needs Further has moved to 7th on the Australian First Season Sire’s List with two Stakes wins to his credit. Only one other first season sire has a stakes win to his credit.

Husson filly out of Zany Lady 2015 - Dan Morton to train

10% shares $8,500 – 5% shares $4,250

This filly really caught my eye at the Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale. She is a very strong well balanced filly with a powerful shoulder and great hindquarter. I have had terrific success with the progeny of Husson having raced eight with six individual winners already. These include Husson Eagle, the outstanding sprinter and winner of the 2016 $1 million Magic Millions Sprint on the Gold Coast on Magic Millions $10,000,000 day.

This filly reminds me a lot of a couple of good Zeditave mares I raced in Calming and Zelady. She has a real presence about her and I was thrilled to pick her up for about half what I was prepared at pay. Husson is a great Sire and the job he has done in Australia has been remarkable given the start he received here standing at Patinack Farm. I could go on forever about his accomplishments but as Hussonet’s best son at stud he was always going to a great chance at stud.

Since the start of the New Year he has continued to get great results including Private Secretary’s outstanding win in the $1 million Magic Millions Mares Race at the Gold Coast in January and his two year old daughter Frolic won the recent $250,000 Inglis Classic race at Randwick. Other current gallopers by him doing the job are Lucky Hussler and of course our very good sprinters Husson Eagle and Raido.

Zany Lady is a very good brood mare by a great sire in Zeditave. She has had five to race for four winners and comes from a very good winning family. Zeditave has had 37 stakes winners as a brood mare sire including the Group 1 winner and Sire Reset. It is hard to go past winning families and in this case the filly was reared at Oaklands Park Stud, one of WA’s very best and the nursery that produced the outstanding gallopers Northerly, Marasco, North Boy and So Secret. This filly offers a complete package which is hard to ignore.

Husson filly out of Jezangani 2015- Kris Lees to train

10% shares $4,900 5% shares $2,450

I was inspecting the Cornerstone Stud draft at the Adelaide Magic Millions and this filly caught my eye being paraded in the Baramul draft. I couldn’t wait to get over to have a closer look at her. I had no idea who she was by or out of but once I inspected her decided I would purchase her. She is an outstanding athlete, has a great head and is as good a walking filly as you are likely to find. I couldn’t fault her.

Jezangani is by the Danehill horse Conatus which Gerry Harvey owned. This is important as many of the best progeny of Husson are out of Danehill line mares. She is a half-sister to the handy gallopers Wutai Mountain and Queen Charlotte.
