Rising Red unlikely for Australian Derby

Thursday 23 March 2017, 3:36pm

Rising Red has been scratched from the Tulloch Stakes and is also unlikely to run in the Australian Derby.

The New Zealand Derby runner-up was an acceptor for Saturday's Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill but was withdrawn on Thursday with co-trainer Trent Busuttin telling stewards the stayer was mildly lame again after working.

A day earlier Busuttin told stewards Rising Red was displaying mild lameness in the near foreleg after a gallop a week earlier which was why he didn't run at Rosehill last Saturday.

Rising Red finished second to Gingernuts in the New Zealand Derby on March 4.

Gingernuts has since won the Group One Rosehill Guineas convincingly last Saturday and is favourite for the Australian Derby on Saturday week.

Another Tulloch Stakes acceptor, the James Cummings-trained Rock And Swing, is in some doubt.

Rock And Swing was found to have minor swelling in his forelegs after he worked on Tuesday morning, possibly the result of a bandage rub.

He will have precautionary scans on Friday and undergo a veterinary examination in the afternoon.

Rock And Swing's stablemate Prized Icon, the Victoria Derby winner, is the early $3.60 Tulloch Stakes favourite.
