Pateman gets first winner as a trainer

Tuesday 28 March 2017, 5:37pm

Champion jumps jockey Steven Pateman has brought up his first winner as a trainer with Zagaya at Geelong.

Pateman was recently granted a dual rider-trainer licence and Zagaya was the first runner he saddled up when he finished third at Terang on March 2.

A fifth placing at Warrnambool followed before his 2-1/2 length win at Geelong on Tuesday.

Pateman, who had another runner earlier on Tuesday's program, said it was a relief to get his first winner as a trainer on the board.

"My heart is still pumping and hopefully it's the first of many," Pateman told broadcaster Racing.com.

Zagaya is raced by Trevor Delroy of Wyadup Valley Farm in Western Australia.

"Obviously we naturally target jumpers, but he's giving us a chance with some flat horses so I'm very grateful to him," Pateman said.
