Sydney Cup still a possibility for Tavago

Thursday 30 March 2017, 6:07pm

The Sydney Cup remains a possibility for Tavago after initial fears he would miss the rest of the autumn and possibly the spring.

Tavago pulled up lame in his off fore leg when he finished last in the Group One BMW at Rosehill on Saturday and first thoughts were he had injured a suspensory ligament.

But co-trainer Trent Busuttin has told stewards scans and X-rays taken by his stable veterinarian revealed no abnormality and the horse's condition had improved significantly since the weekend.

Racing NSW's senior veterinarian Dr Craig Suann and stewards inspected Tavago on Thursday morning and he is due to be examined again before and after a scheduled barrier trial early next week.

"Dr Suann reported that his inspection at the trot today, subsequent to the gelding doing slow work this morning, had established the gelding's condition had improved since Saturday and whilst the gelding is a poor mover in front, there was no discernible favouring of either foreleg," Racing NSW stewards said ina statement.

"Mr Busuttin advised that consideration was now being given to starting Tavago in the Sydney Cup, subject to the gelding continuing to please the stable and his veterinarian."

Busuttin intends to run Tavago in a trial on Tuesday at Gosford.

The $2 million Sydney Cup (3200m) is at Randwick on Saturday week.

The winner of last year's Group One Australian Derby, Tavago won the Sky High Stakes leading into The BMW.
