Cooroi to chase winter glory

Saturday 1 April 2017, 2:22pm

Filly Cooroi Chase has lived up to her recent runaway trial win and earned herself a winter carnival campaign with victory in the two-year-old handicap (1050m) at Doomben.

Despite blowing from $2.80 to $4.40 late in the betting on Saturday, Cooroi Chase scored by 1-1/4 lengths in front of the heavily backed Nick's Reward ($2.50), with Wudang Blade in third.

Trainers Peter and Will Hulbert have a big opinion of Cooroi Chase but were forced to scratch her twice in recent weeks due to wet tracks.

They took her to Deagon on Tuesday, where she won a trial by 16 lengths and ran a similar time to star sprinter Steel Zip.

Peter Hulbert said he and Will hated running first starters on wet tracks but were left with no choice.

"In the end it came down to the fact she had to run. But she has sat three and four deep the whole way today and came away for a good win," he said.

"She will press on into the winter but whether it's in a 1600m race like the JJ Atkins or something shorter we will see in a few weeks."

Cooroi Chase is likely to have her next start over 1200m in a fortnight or three weeks.

Winning jockey Michael Hellyer said Cooroi Chase could prove to be top-class.

"I have had a wrap on her for a good while and I'm looking forward to riding her in the winter," he said.
