Brisbane's female apprentices to the fore

Sunday 9 April 2017, 2:56pm

A double at Toowoomba for apprentice Rebecca Williams has set the scene for an Australian first.

Williams produced two of the rides of the day at Toowoomba to win on Cantbuybetter and Real Ego.

It took her to 13 wins for the season and fourth place on the Queensland metropolitan apprentices title.

Tiffani Brooker leads on 28 wins with Lani Fancourt second on 24.

That makes it highly likely the top three spots in the Brisbane apprentices premiership will be filled by female jockeys this season which would be an Australian first.

Williams moved to Toowoomba last year and has ridden nearly 50 winners since.

"Things have been going well and I have been getting support from a lot of trainers," Williams said.

Brooker also rode a double on Saturday and scored her biggest win to date on Dreams Aplenty in the Toowoomba Guineas.

"(Trainer) John Zielke has been a great supporter and he gave me the ride on Saturday even thought I couldn't claim," Brooker said.

"I would obviously love to win the apprentices' premiership but I will have to concentrate on being consistent."
