The leading Australian first season sire by winners, Widden Stud's Your Song passed an important milestone on Saturday when siring his first stakes-winner with promising filly Split Lip taking out the Listed SAJC Dequetteville Stakes at Morphettville.
Placed at her first two starts, the Will Clarken trained filly cast off maiden status with a dominant two length win at Morphettville last month.
Stepping into Black Type company for the first time, Split Lip was strong to the line winning the 1050 metre dash by a long neck over expensive Exceed and Excel filly Luqyaa, a $500,000 Inglis Ester purchase for Shadwell.
In contrast, Split Lip was an $11,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Lincoln Farm draft for her trainer and has already won over $95,000 in prizemoney.
Will Clarken returned to the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale this year to purchase the full brother to Split Lip, who was consigned by Widden and made $44,000.
Bred by Warringah Stud Farm, Split Lip is the first foal of Little Less Lip, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group I winner Blevvo. She was covered last year by another of the Widden sires in Shamus Award.
Split Lip is one of seven winners for Your Song, who nearly had a double in Adelaide with his two year-old gelding Tabbing beaten a head in the previous race.
A Group I winning son of Fastnet Rock, Your Song will look to follow in the footsteps of other successful sire sons of Fastnet Rock in Smart Missile and Hinchinbrook, who have taken Champion Australian First Season Sire honours in the past two years.
