Promising Tumbler to come back at Doomben

Monday 10 April 2017, 1:41pm

Tumbler will make her delayed return to racing at Doomben after missing a scheduled start at Toowoomba because of a wide barrier.

Tumbler would have been one of the favourites in the Toowoomba Plastics Plate (1100m) but trainer Barry Lockwood elected to wait a week.

The mare has a history of injury, usually caused by herself, but Lockwood said she was fine.

"There is nothing wrong with her. But she drew very wide at Toowoomba and I didn't want to risk her," Lockwood said.

"She is a horse who goes hard when she decides to. I could see her doing it tough out wide and then firing up the Toowoomba hill. It could have ruined her for the winter."

Tumbler is one of 14 entries for Saturday's open handicap (1050m) but Lockwood will wait until she gets through a gallop at Eagle Farm to confirm a start.

"I will work her on Tuesday morning and if I am happy she will go around on Saturday. But there is also a suitable race on Saturday week," he said.

The now five-year-old Tumbler has had only six starts, winning five and finishing second in the other.

Lockwood has no doubts she will be up to some of the fillies and mares stakes races during the winter carnival.

"There is plenty for her during the winter but we will be looking at getting black-type for her," he said.

"It has been a stop-start career for her but she deserves to have a shot at the better races."

Divine Service and Punta Norte, who were emergencies and did not get a run in the Weetwood have been entered in Saturday's 1050m and 1350m open handicaps respectively.
